With Apple striving to meet Greenpeace standards in removing all toxic and non-recyclable materials from its products, the iPod maker could well use a guy like Josh Darrah on its team of designers. The Australian graphic designer going Dell Inspiron 1526 battery by the screen name of jozaeh on flickr has created an iPod mini case almost entirely out of wood, fastening it with metal plates and screws for a 100% green enclosure.
But why not go with a laptop or even the new mobile laptops called netbooks and their built in computing powers? Generally the answer is cost and mobility.
Hard-core gaming laptops were once thought of as sticker-shock items, but they’ve changed sharply of late in both looks and price. In their new incarnation, they’re acting as big-screen media centers and desktop replacements, Gateway SQU-517 battery, now that prices for the fastest parts have plummeted to a level that makes them affordable to the masses. At $1,800 (street), the Gateway P-7808u is aggressively priced for a gaming rig, with a mobile Intel quad-core processor and a powerful Nvidia graphics card built into a light 17-inch platform. In a revised look at its 2007 battery forecast, Chicago-based marketing firm Mintel predicts flat battery sales this year because of the recession, with some recovery in 2011. The firm says VGP-BPS2C batteries will take a hit this year because consumers want to cut non-essentials. Batteries are essential, but only for discretionary items, Mintel suggests. The firm says consumers are buying fewer new products requiring primary batteries, and are also declining to buy batteries for the products they have.
The decision to stick with the laptop format for the upcoming Model S has met some disapproval. According to large Fujitsu FPCBP119 battery format supporters and producers, this type of battery offers the distinct advantage of longevity and durability in the automotive applications. The laptop format has not seen extensive testing inside an automobile. This format also suffers from a very limited number of discharge and recharge cycles compared to the large format style.
Darrah not only crafted his iPod mini case out of wood, but also made a cool matching charger dock, as shown in the third picture below. The designer went for screws because he allegedly plans on replacing the Dell Inspiron 1520 battery and, perhaps, the flash memory in the future. Not only is this the green way to go, but the metal parts add even more of an old-school look to the device.
