It really makes a difference; without enough, the laptop will run noticeably slower. 2GB is generally a good place to start. Note that most netbooks are limited to 1GB of memory, especially those that come with Microsoft Windows XP Home. Choose a different version of Windows if available and upgrade to 2GB.Some mini-laptops have screens that are 10 inches (diagonal) or smaller. This can be a bit cramped for office applications, but is still plenty for email and Web surfing and other tasks (provided you sit close enough and your eyesight is good or you have good glasses).
Typically the speakers on Toshiba laptops are a cut above the rest. This is true of the U500, but to a much smaller extent. Compared to many similarly-sized laptops, which often suffer truly appalling audio, these speakers deliver acceptable clarity and volume, but bass is just as lacking as any contemporary. Toshiba(PA3612U-1BRS) also appears to have dropped support for Dolby Sound Room on this model, something that was present on the outgoing U400. Overall this is a decent laptop for entertainment, but not an outstanding one.
Apple’s top-performing workstation was updated last March. Apple(A1012 Battery) replaced the single-model Mac Pro with a pair of quad-core 2.8GHz Intel Xeon 5400 processors with two new Mac Pro models, one with a single quad-core 2.66GHz Intel Xeon 3500 processor, the other with two quad-core (a total of eight cores) Xeon 5500 processors running at 2.26GHz.The Mac Pros also have new graphics cards: nVidia’s GeForce GT 120 with 512MB of dedicated video RAM. The Mac Pro’s interior was redesigned to make accessing its internals and adding or upgrading components easier.
It’s no secret that chip maker Qualcomm has been working on low power processors for mini-laptops for a while now. The company, which is best known for developing cellphone processors, has been demonstrating netbook PA3594U-1BRS prototypes at trade shows since late 2008. Today Qualcomm upped its game by introducing a whole new term: Smartbook. The idea is that Smartbooks look a lot like netbooks, but pack many of the features we’ve come to expect from handheld smartphones.
The Samsung N140 (NP-N140-KA03UK) is a new range of compact netbook from the category of ultra portable notebooks. Powered by the innovative Intel Atom Processor and 1GB RAM, this new Samsung notebook ensures optimum portability. The A.6 cell battery promises greater netbook Aspire 3000 battery life of more than 10 hours. This increased battery life gives you flexibility to work without much hassles.
Unfortunately the L505D’s multimedia-friendly qualities seem to begin and end with the high-definition screen. When you look at the system’s 2.2-GHz AMD Turion 64 X2 mobile processor and 3GB of RAM you would expect a full-featured multimedia machine capable of handling applications like Photoshop. But when we ran our suite of multimedia benchmark tests, it lagged far behind other multimedia laptops in its category. In our video encoding tests, the L505D took almost twice as much time to encode a sample video as other multimedia laptops. And on our Photoshop tests the L505D was again crushed by other, albeit far more expensive, 16-inch laptops like the Dell(Inspiron 6400 Battery) Studio XPS 16 and HP Pavilion HDX16t.
It is equipped with two USB ports, 1394 Firewire, network and modem. The Dell(Dell Vostro 1400 Battery) Vostro 1400 Laptop offers connectivity options like Bluetooth and Wireless-N Wi-Fi. It is equipped with Nvidia GeForce 8400 graphics card, which ensures great graphics performance with shared onboard memory. The Vostro 1400 has Sigmatel HD Audio and stereo speakers.
One thing the Envy 15 lacks is an internal optical drive, which is somewhat puzzling given that Apple managed to cram one into the 15-inch MacBook Pro. While the Envy 15 is about 3 ounces lighter than the MacBook Pro, its size is so close to the Apple machine that inspired it, that this omission is frustrating. Of course, you could argue that the Envy 15 is a cutting-edge laptop, and on the cutting edge you can get your software and movies via digital distribution. For those who want to take advantage of their existing libraries of software and movies on physical media, HP(HP COMPAQ nw9440 Battery) offers both a $75 USB DVD writer and a $225 Blu-ray reader/DVD writer drive.
There’s no doubt, netbooks offer superb value and portability for the money. So why then are a whopping 30% of all netbook purchases returned to the retailer where they were sold? The number comes from a recent Yankee Group report which concludes that consumers just aren’t well enough informed about the performance characteristics of netbooks before they buy.
