Cogan is not some EV-naysayer wedded to internal combustion. He’s been covering EVs and alt-fuel vehicles since 1992 through his award-winning magazine Green Car Journal. He spent a year living with the pioneering General Motors EV1 electric car, and you’d be hard-pressed to find an alt-fuel car he hasn’t driven. But despite their promise of eco-friendlier mobility, HP Pavilion dv2000 battery-powered vehicles remain cost-prohibitive and will for some time to come, he says.
The keyboard is similar to the “raised” ones used on MacBooks and some Sony(Sony VGP-BPS5 battery) laptops and was easy to type on, and looks great as well. Though the laptop is a little heavier than most at 1.23kg its dimensions meant it felt compact and portable.
The N310 is yet to be announced here, but the specs on the overseas model include an Intel Atom N270 processor, a 10.1-inch 1024×600-pixel screen,Sony VGP-BPS2 battery, three USB ports, 802.11g radio and SD card reader. For all you germophobes out there, the keyboard also features an antibacterial coating.
The screen has a 16:9 aspect ratio, which is odd for a business notebook but is great if you want to watch recorded digital TV programs. It has a native resolution of 1366×768 and possesses good contrast. The lid is strong and this is true of the laptop as a whole. It feels very sturdy, even when you hold it with one hand from either edge. And despite being such a big notebook, it only weighs 2.5kg!

The trouble with Apple(M8983 Battery for PowerBook G4)’s SD slot is that some of the flash card sticks out of the notebook. You will forget the card is there, and it will catch on the lip of your bag. Even cheap cameras have sunken, spring-loaded (push to insert, push to pop out) SD card slots. Still, it is much more convenient than USB flash adapters, and Snow Leopard has a little secret that makes the SD slot even more useful.
The Dell Inspiron 1545 (i1545-USE010ST) ($699.98 list) has very few amenities for a laptop, but it meets two of the most basic laptop requirements: its screen and hard drive are large enough to handle the gamut of multimedia tasks. It’s Intel Pentium branded processor lags behind the mainstream Core 2 Duos, so it isn’t exactly a speed demon, but you won’t hear a peep from frugal shoppers. Be watchful, though, Dell Latitude D630 battery,of two almost identical versions found in Staples. The 1545 (i1545-004ST) is the better deal, as it gives you 4GB of memory for $649.98 (list). Although this version comes with less memory (3GB), it adds a different color and 64-bit Windows. Otherwise, every other part is identical, but is it worth the extra $50?
