That kind of pricing can be a bit rich for the blood of many smaller companies, so other vendors are rushing in to fill the gap. And Dell(Dell Vostro 1500 battery)’s new Vostro 1220 is a good example. With prices starting at $800, the Vostro includes an Intel Celeron 900 chip, a DVD writer (some ultraportables lack optical drives), 2GB RAM and a 160GB hard drive. Extra-cost options include upgraded processors, more memory, and bigger and faster hard-drives.
Specifications include Intel Core 2 Duo processors up to 3.06GHz with up to 8GB DDR2 memory and storage options including hard drives up to 500GB or Flash solid state drives up to 128GB. A DVD/RW or Blu-ray drive is also fitted, which can be removed for less travelling weight.
Connectivity includes built-in Gigabit Ethernet and 802.11n wireless, with optional mobile broadband and Bluetooth.
It certainly looks like you’re getting a lot of laptop for your money. For a price that’s not much more than you’d spend on a top class netbook Acer Aspire 3500 battery, you’re getting a laptop with a 16:9, 16in screen. It looks and feels like a good deal.
One of the biggest advantages of using the USB to charge a mobile is that you can do it almost anywhere. One of my colleagues uses this, and unlike the rest of the people who run around with bulky chargers, this guy roams around with a small normal-USB to mini-USB connector that is smaller than his little finger. He plugs his mobile into the PC HP Pavilion dv2000 battery with this and charges it.
The mBook is so small and light that once I had it attached to my backpack, it felt like it wasn’t even there. I have been able to walk around for a few hours and post stuff relatively quickly, much more so than running back and forth from the show floor to a press room, for sure. That said, I could also walk around with a laptop Sony VGP-BPS2 battery that is “always on”. For reference, here’s the weight of the mBook relative to my camera: DSLR+lens = 3lbs, mBook=0.74lbs. Now my laptop weighs 4.5lbs.
Simple at its core, Phoenix Freeze is designed with laptops in mind, but will work on any PC that has Bluetooth capabilities. Once installed on the PC,ThinkPad X60 Tablet battery, the application can be paired with any Bluetooth phone or other device. Basically a security tool, Freeze senses the proximity of the device and will automatically lock the computer when you walk away with it. When you return, the program unlocks the PC upon your arrival.
