Where do the laptops go? Exactly where you think: In their haste, fliers forget to put them back into their carry-on bag after they go through security checkpoint, where the rule for years has been that you have to remove your laptop completely from your luggage when you put it through the x-ray scanner.
Enter netbooks. It is difficult to trace where the idea for netbooks came from; there have been similar products introduced with little or no success several times since the early 1990s. Microsoft pushed hard to convince many vendors to build a small and light instant-on notebook for executives with some storage but not much. Using Windows CE as a base, these devices were built by HP(HP Pavilion dv2000 battery), Dell, Compaq and others and none of them sold well. Now we have high-speed wireless data services and everyone is enthralled with “cloud computing,” so netbooks should be the next wave of products expected to really sell well.
Elsewhere, there’s more hardware to covet. Intel’s wireless 5100 AGN chip means fast draft-n, and Nvidia’s GeForce 9600M GT graphics chip can easily handle Blu-ray decoding as well as some basic gaming. In our Crysis test, the laptop returned a respectable 47fps in our low-quality benchmark - don’t expect to push it any higher, though. There’s also the hybrid analogue/digital TV tuner, to suit all areas of broadcast.
A “special recognition” prize, consisting of a Nintendo DS Console, went to Kirsten Abela Caruana. Kirsten accomplished the outstanding feat of collecting more than 7,200 Dell Inspiron 500m batteries throughout the campaign.
Every time I have to replace a computer, I go through the same thought process: what is going to be the most practical for this particular situation/use/need. I use the same thought process when it comes to recommending specs for computers — Mac & PC.
“The beauty of what the Redfly does, and this is so incredibly powerful, is it allows you to leverage every application, including e-mail, Dell Inspiron 1501 battery, that you’ve got on your mobile and that’s huge. And nobody is doing this,” said Winthrop, who joined Celio’s advisory board after seeing a demonstration of the Redfly.
Redfly now works on Windows Mobile-based smart phones but expects by the end of the year to support BlackBerrys and phones running the Android operating system from Google. But there’s been no response from Apple about Celio’s desire to make Redfly work on an iPhone. Rumors reported in news articles and blogs say Apple(M8983 Battery for PowerBook G4) is working to make a large screen iPod Touch with a bigger screen that is its response to the netbook phenomenon.
A legion of other chip suppliers offer ARM-based chips for mobile devices, including Texas Instruments, Freescale Semiconductor, Samsung, Nvidia, STMicroelectronics, and Broadcom.
The Toshiba(Toshiba PA3399U-1BRS battery)-Docomo T-01A–which will be offered outside of Japan as the TG01–runs Windows Mobile 6.1 and is designed to take on the iPhone. Only 9.9mm thick, it uses a 4.1-inch WVGA 800×480 384k pixel resistive touch screen and comes with support for 3G HSPA, Wi-Fi, GPS and assisted-GPS.
