If you’ll need to use your notebook computer for long periods of time on battery power — as on a long flight, for instance — you’ll need to think about how best to conserve power. First, before you go, assess the longevity of your notebook computer’s battery. Remember that older batteries lose their charge more quickly — and they don’t hold a charge as well as newer ones. So if your notebook is outfitted with an older battery, consider buying a replacement before you leave. And take along a fully-charged spare battery for worry-free mobile computing.
The system’s only disappointing benchmark score is the result of its compact 6-cell, 47-watt-hour battery pack—a woeful two hours 15 minutes of Dell Inspiron 6400 battery life on MobileMark 2007. The Dell XPS 16, with its 9-cell battery, almost doubled that runtime, and even HP’s jumbo HDX18t did better.
Despite its brief battery life, the Pavilion dv6(1253cl’s right-sizing appeal—particularly that condensed but convenient keypad—joins its Blu-ray playback, HDMI output, and remote control in making it an entertainment PC that’s right at home wherever there’s an AC outlet. The Dell(Dell Inspiron 6000 battery) Studio XPS 16’s battery advantage and gorgeous 1080p RGB display help it retain the Editors’ Choice crown, but the dv6(1253cl) is an impressive lower-priced alternative.
One thing I’ve always disliked about the iPhone is the Apple connector. It seems that virtually every other manufacturer has gone with micro-USB and Apple stands alone with its proprietary connector. Last month, Apple signed an agreement to support micro-USB on cell phones in Europe so future iPhones may be different.
On the software side, the CF-F8 provides a fairly minimalist (but good) set of applications. You get Roxio Creator LJB and Roxio BackOnTrack for data backup and disc creation, Gateway SQU-517 battery,and the control panel has an option for the “Panasonic Power Plan Extension Utility,” which will let you squeeze as much extra life out of the machine as possible. The system comes with a PDF manual, as well.
Much of what’s new about the 15-inch MacBook Pro is inherited from Apple’s supply chain, but Apple also made a few carefully targeted changes to MacBook Pro’s core design. The nonremovable rechargeable battery, an idea hatched with iPod, has found its way to Apple’s commercial mainstay. Apple claims that by making the battery a non-user-serviceable component, it was able to use 17-inch PowerBook G4 battery technology that lasts for up to five years, a thousand charge cycles, before losing significant capacity. This claim will take five years to prove, but it is conceivable, with deep knowledge of battery characteristics burned into the notebook’s intelligent charge management circuitry.
According to Tesla, the laptop battery offers proven performance at an affordable price. With mass production of this type of battery ongoing for several decades now, the technology has advanced beyond that of current large format batteries. As Tesla has indicated, the mass economies that surround laptop batteries have increased competition, driven technological advances, and reduced prices making them perfectly suitable for cars.
