The ProBook 4710s keyboard fits a notebook of this size, in that it’s mostly quite large, with a deliberately huge space bar row (including CTRL, the function key and Windows key), Sony VGP-BPS2C battery, which we found mostly pleasant to type with. The only real oddity here is that despite the amount of space on offer — which includes allowing a full number pad — the cursor keys are oddly tiny. They’re not impossible to hit, but they’re solidly out of scale to the rest of the keyboard.
Consumers can toggle between modes such as Presentation, Gaming, Word Processing, Cinema, and Turbo Dell Vostro 1000 Battery through the touch-control shortcuts. This automatically adjusts the screen brightness and processor resources to give a richer look as well as save energy. The EX460 houses an 802.11N wireless local area network card along with a built-in high-definition 1.3 megapixel webcam and microphone.
Unlike the dv3z, the dv3-2150us has Intel rather than AMD parts under the hood—a 2.1GHz Core 2 Duo T6500 processor and Intel integrated-graphics chipset. The latter is about as fast as continental drift, as seen by the system’s piteous 3DMark06 scores; any halfway serious gamer should steer clear. That said, the CPU is fairly capable. Even though it’s one of the T- rather than P-series chips with 2MB, not 3MB, of Level 2 cache—the system’s Windows Media Encoder, Cinebench R10, and Photoshop CS4 benchmarks are all competitive with the Aspire 3935 (6504) and MacBook Pro 13-inch (Though the Apple M8983 Battery, to be fair, will be quicker running native apps than running Windows benchmark tests under Boot Camp).
Finding an ExpressCard slot in a $499 laptop is a nice extra, and potentially useful for adding a mobile broadband modem or Bluetooth adapter (although Bluetooth is common enough to be part of the standard rollout, even in budget systems).
The keys are all fractionally smaller than you’d expect on a standard laptop, but nothing to complain about. Touch typing was incredibly easy,ThinkPad T500 Batteries, particularly as the keys feel nice and firm with no flex and provide plenty of feedback. The keys are also mostly in the right place; only the backslash key has been relocated above the Enter key, but it’s easy enough.
These panels, by the way, are 64 inches by 62 inches. They cost about $180 a piece but that is just the beginning of the expense. A lot of other equipment is necessary: laptop batteries for storage, mounting brackets, circuit box, cable, etc. The full cost of a system to meet my minimal needs is about $11,000. This isn’t cheap.
