The dragon-and-floral imprint finish will also need to appeal to you; the Pavilion dv3-2155mx is a fixed configuration retail model with one and only one chassis option. There aren’t any deal-breakers to be found on this $729 thin-and-light laptop–depending on your opinions of dragons–but the $749 Dell Studio S1440-022B offers a larger display and a lighter weight (but no DVD burner), while the $799 Toshiba(PA3399U-1BAS battery) Satellite E105-S1602 is only a hair heavier and features a 14-inch display, backlit keys, and a two-year warranty.
With that in mind, there’s no better time to lay out a chunk of cash for a new computer than when the government is keeping its tax-grabbing fingers out of the deal. In this weekend’s back-to-school sales tax holiday in Missouri, shoppers can spend up to $3,500 on tax-free computer purchases — enough to equip the average college student several times over.
That’s a hefty chunk of performance, but it can be faster if you want. The M6400 boasts twin hard disk bays, allowing you to increase performance using a RAID setup (incidentally,Dell Inspiron 6400 battery, you don’t have to forsake the optical drive if you do). You can even specify two 256GB SSD drives if you’re feeling really flush. More remarkable than this, though, is that the Covet is equipped with four DIMM slots where its rivals sport only two.
That means adding large amounts of memory will be significantly cheaper, though you’ll still need to take out a small mortage to get right up to the 16GB maximum. Conversely, if the price above gives you palpitations, choosing the standard (non-”Covet”) M6400 allows you to downgrade several elements to save money.
Acer(Aspire 3000 battery)’s new netbooks and mini-laptops all come in 10.1 inch and 11.6 inch sizes. No 9 inch models were announced today (despite a recent FCC filing). Several are also being released under Acer’s Gateway brand. There aren’t a lot of details available about these new netbooks and mini-laptops at the moment, but based on the pictures at Gizmodo, it looks like Acer has been holding back on us. In addition to the recently semi-unveiled Aspire One D250 and Aspire One 751, there seem to be a few models with entirely (or at least somewhat) different case designs, touchpads, and keyboards.
The display sits on a single, rotating hinge, and the tiny-but-decent-sounding Altec Lansing speakers are built into the bottom of the display. This gives you three options for screen placement: use it like a traditional laptop, FPCBP155 battery, face it away from the keyboard for using just the display (for movie or photo viewing), or flatten it down on top of the keyboard for use as a tablet. The screen will autorotate, but there’s a rotate key on the bezel should you need it, along with a fingerprint reader and a Webcam.
Sakti3 has been amassing funds and partnerships since we first wrote about its $2 million investment from Khosla Ventures last year. It remains tight-lipped about its technology, ToughBook CF-50 battery, however, which stems from research led by CEO Ann Marie Sastry, who heads up University of Michigan’s energy systems engineering program.
