HP ships the Pavilion(Pavilion dv8000 Battery) MS214 with a USB keyboard and USB optical mouse. While this undoubtedly helps keep the costs down, running wires from the back or side of the computer to the mouse and keyboard detracts from the clean aesthetic you get by packing your computer and display into a single piece.

As with most netbooks which are tight on space, the speakers on the IdeaPad(IdeaPad SL500 Batteries) are into a poor location. Instead of facing the user, the speakers are currently pointing downwards. Everything sounds muffled if the netbook is on your lap, on a bed, or a sofa. However, it wasn’t much of a problem if it’s on a desk since the netbook’s “feet” create enough of a gap.

But the speakers could have definitely been outfitted in a better location. There’s nothing spectacular about the audio quality and the midrange is mediocre, but it’s not a problem for enjoying Hulu, YouTube, and other web video content. They get loud enough and get the job done. The audio card is decent and if you plugin a decent pair of headphones, everything sounds vastly better. Plus, you won’t be disturbing others either.

The touchpad is nice and wide, features two distinct buttons, and a clearly marked section on the right side for scrolling. But there’s one major problem: The touchpad software doesn’t have a setting for disabling tapping while you’re typing. You can either disable tapping altogether, FPCBP83,which means you can’t simulate a left-click by tapping the touchpad, or you have to type extraordinarily carefully in order to prevent your palm from swiping the touchpad while you’re using the keyboard. Because if you don’t, the cursor is going to jump all over the place which can wreak havoc when you’re trying to type documents, emails, or pretty much anything else.

While the ASRock ION 330 isn’t exactly a high end gaming rig, it certainly has enough oomph in the graphics department to handle games that would choke up a netbook PA3399U-1BRS or nettop with an Atom N270 CPU and integrated GMA 950 graphics.

The touchpad is nice and wide and features two distinct buttons for left and right clicks. The buttons feature a soft touch. In other words, “click” might not be the right word to use, as you probably won’t hear anything at all when you pres the buttons below the keyboard.

The IdeaCentre C300 is Lenovo(ThinkPad Z60m Battery)’s All-in-One desktop answer to the netbook. With a stunning 20″ large widescreen display, an easily adjustable viewing angle, a large internal hard disk drive, an integrated DVD player/burner, HD graphics and integrated stereo speakers, you can enjoy movies, games and more and this style conscious computing device.

There’s no better way to put a webcam and microphone to the test without using Skype. I opted to use the 4.2 beta version that supports HD-like video quality. Although this laptop only has an underpowered .3 megapixel resolution camera, I hoped to stream some quality video. Unfortunately, I found myself quite disappointed with the quality. Images were dark, grainy, and pixelated even in a bright room. It’s definitely a problem if you can’t make out a face easily.

“If you’re a developer, you’re thinking I have one more reason not to develop for any other mobile platform and develop for Apple(Apple M9337 Battery),” said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst with Interpret, a market research firm.

Around the sides of the computer you’ll find 2 USB ports, mic and headphone jacks, a multi-format flash card reader, a Super Multi disc burner, and brightness controls. On the back of the computer there are 4 more USB ports, plus an Ethernet jack, a line in jack, and the power jack.

Thing is, while the HP Mini 110 has a pretty good keyboard for a netbook, it’s only 92% the size of a full sized keyboard. There’s clearly room for a larger keyboard on the HP(HP dv8000 Battery) Mini 311 and it would have been nice if HP had used the extra space. I got a chance to ask an HP representative why the company stuck with the smaller model, and was told it was because HP has received such positive feedback on the keyboard.

The long and short of it is, the dual core processor helps a lot with CPU-intensive tasks that take advantage of both cores. It helps even more if you’re using an application which can use both a dual core CPU and NVIDIA’s CUDA technology to really speed things up. You’d need a computer with a much faster processor if you wanted to be able to transcode a4:34 video file in just 2:23 without GPU acceleration.

Above the keyboard are three buttons: a power button, a mute button, and a little key with an arrow on it that you can press to fire up Lenovo(ThinkPad T60 Battery)’s backup and restore software.

As encryption becomes more prevalent in business PCs, Intel has added features that avoid productivity slowdowns. First, Intel incorporated new instructions for the Advanced Encryption Standard into the hardware, speeding up encryption and decryption.

The display on the IdeaPad(IdeaPad SL500 Batteries) S10-2 isn’t too extraordinary. It’s an average 10.1 inch glossy screen with LED back-lighting running at a 1024 x 600 resolution. There’s nothing that truly sets it apart from other netbook screens. The display is recessed into the casing with a thick surrounding bezel. Most new laptops and netbooks manufacturers are opting for the cleaner look of an edge-to-edge display with a single piece of glass.

While he acknowledged the department’s figure of 40 air transport-related incidents since 1991 involving lithium laptop batteries and devices powered by lithium batteries, Kerchner said it is a small number in the context of the 3.3 billion lithium batteries transported in 2008 alone.

Although this display is glossy, it isn’t too difficult to use in bright rooms, but will almost always look dull under direct sunlight. The blacks are also brought out further due to the glossy screen. If you look closely, the grid-line appearance of the pixel arrangement is more noticeable than on other displays. The viewing angles are not a problem if the IdePad is on your lap or on a table directly in front of you. However, the colors quickly begin to deteriorate if the screen is tilted forwards or backwards. Fortunately, horizontal viewing angles are good enough to accommodate a person sitting besides you.

With Apple’s decision to go with the iPhone operating system, instead of Mac OS X or a hybrid, the company seems even more intent on using it as a major platform for mobile development. Apple(Apple 661-2569 Battery) has outpaced rivals in the mobile application market with more than 140,000 apps, but it has faced increasing competition from Google’s Android, which is also being pitched as a tablet operating system.

The HP(HP dv8000 Battery) Pavilion MS214 is an attractive all-in-one desktop. The display has a glossy black border while the base is a metallic silver color. The computer measures just over 2 inches deep, although the base takes up about 8 inches.

I also ran another video transcoding test using MediaCoder, which has a CUDA encoder for H.264 videos. In other words, while the test in the previous section shows how long it takes to transcode a video from an uncompressed AVI file to an Xvid file using an application that relies solely on the CPU, this test shows how much faster a similar job goes when using a GPU accelerated encoder.

The keyboard on the HP Mini 311 is almost identical to that on the smaller HP(HP NC4400 Battery) Mini 110. The only real difference is that the edges have been rounded to give the keyboard an interesting visual effect.

The new Intel Keyboard-Video-Mouse Remote Control (KVM Remote Control), features available with dual-core Intel Core i5 and i7 vPro processors work in conjunction with Intel(R) integrated graphics, bringing a stop to IT administrators’ frustration with having to ask users, “What do you see?” Instead, they will see users’ displays just as the users do and have full control of the PC, even if the operating system is inoperative. Previously, KVM functionality required appliances that cost as much as $200 and more per PC.

The Wind U160 uses the Intel Pine Trail platform, with the new-generation, single-chip architecture Intel Atom N450 processor. With very low power consumption of just 5.5 watts, this processor supports extra-long laptop battery run-time, while also providing outstanding display performance.

Equipped with entertainment essential including a 16:9 aspect ratio panel, DVD burner/player, HDMI port on select models, users can easily display multimedia presentations at the office or watch movies at home. This laptop offers constant connectivity with WiFi, Ethernet and optional Bluetooth. It also comes with VeriFace technology and built-in cameras.

The dedicated scroll region unfortunately limits the area available for regular movements even further. Implementing a two finger scroll could potentially have saved some space. The left and right-click keys were thankfully the best part of the touchpad area. They offer a nice quick click for feedback when pressed. Both the keys are large enough for regular use and are easily accessible. Lenovo(ThinkPad Z60T Battery) should have allocated more space for the touchpad as they have with the new IdeaPad S10-3.

The rule changes would also require electronics goods to be carried in cargo sections that either have fire suppression systems, or are accessible by the pilots in case of a fire. Kerchner said that is impractical and would lead to, in many cases, electronics goods piled right behind the cockpit.

Finally, the keys just don’t feel as snappy and responsive as I’ve come to expect from a keyboard. Laptop Magazine describes the U150 keyboard as “mushy,” and I have a hard time coming up with a better word than that. I described the keys as “cheap” feeling in my unboxing video,FPCBP105, and several readers took issue with that characterization. And cheap’s probably not the right word. I’m sure the plastic in these keys costs just as much as that in most other low cost notebook keyboards. But I generally didn’t find typing on the Lenovo IdeaPad U150 to be all that pleasant. The keyboard is also a little on the noisy side.

For that reason, it’s easier to compare the Pavilion MS214 to a thin and light notebook than a netbook. In my tests, the computer scroed about as well on most tests as I would expect a notebook with an Intel CULV processor to perform. But the HP(HP DV2000 Battery) Pavilion MS214 isn’t a notebook. It’s a full-fledged desktop computer built into an 18.5 inch widescreen display.

Lenovo(IdeaPad SL500 Batteries) crafted the IdeaPad G550 laptop for professionals who are looking for a PC that can get the job done for work and that also has the style and design that make it ideal for personal computing. The redesigned, thinner and lighter G Series laptop features choices of either a hairline-like silver finish or a smooth and glossy slate-colored finish.

The ION chipset also helps out when you’re running software that can take advantage of GPU acceleration features of NVIDIA’s CUDA platform. That includes HD Flash video playback using Adobe Flash Player 10.1 beta. I was able to stream several 720p and 1080p HD Flash video clips from YouTube on this system while connected to a 1280 x 1024 pixel monitor.

Another problem I have with all Lenovo keyboards is the placement of the Ctrl and Fn keys. Most laptops put the Ctrl key in the bottom left corner of the keyboard and place the Fn key to its right. Lenovo(ThinkPad R60 Battery) puts the Fn key on the outside and the Ctrl key next to it on the right. I had to spend about a week using this keyboard before I stopped hitting Fn+C every time I wanted to copy text or Fn+T when I wanted to open a new browser tab. Again, this isn’t a problem if you’re used to Lenovo keyboards. But if you’re not, it will take some getting used to.

Intel(R) Anti-Theft Technology, available with Intel vPro Technology frustrates thieves by locking access to a PC if a central server or built-in intelligence concludes it is lost or stolen. New Intel Anti-Theft Technology version 2.0 enables encryption solutions to disable access to cryptographic keys through hardware to completely block access to data, and also makes it simpler to reactivate a PC once in rightful hands. Also, a custom message can be displayed in a pre-OS screen of the disabled PC for anyone who tries to access the computer. Many computer makers plan to support Intel AT 2.0, such as Fujitsu, HP, Lenovo and Panasonic, and such security companies as Absolute Software, PGP, Phoenix and WinMagic.

A 10-inch LED screen with a reaction time of just 8 millisecond: The Wind(Wind U100 Battery) U160 has an energy-saving 10.1-inch screen with LED backlight. The display’s reaction time of just 8 seconds makes it twice as fast as a traditional notebook PC, and provides ultra-smooth performance when watching a film or animation. With highly detailed image quality and bright colors, the Wind U160 demonstrates that a small notebook PC can provide movie theater quality audiovisual enjoyment.

I am also disappointed to say that I found myself frustrated with the touchpad. Even I’m aware that this is a small device, the touchpad simply seems too small. Even the Dell(Inspiron 6400 Battery) Mini 9, which has a frame that’s an inch smaller than the IdeaPad S10-2, sports a larger touchpad. I often felt constrained and ran into the small raised border surrounding the touchpad when making quick movements. There’s support for the pinch multi-touch gesture to zoom in or out, which is an appreciated addition.

The fan can get a little loud at times, but that’s hardly surprising for a thin and light computer with a decent graphics processor. While a quieter fan would be nice, I can’t imagine building this computer without some kind of fan to help keep the internal components from overheating.

For air travelers, the department would also prohibit air passengers from keeping extra alkaline or rechargeable nickel-metal-hydride (NiMH) batteries in their checked-in luggage. Those laptop batteries are acceptable if they are inside the devices. They are also permitted inside or outside devices if stored in carry-on luggage.

Apple(Apple A1175 Battery) also appears reluctant to allow San Jose’s Adobe access to its iPhone operating system, especially when its Flash software is the cause of most of its crashes on the Mac, a claim Jobs reportedly made at his staff meeting. By advocating HTML5, Jobs could be attempting to help precipitate the decline of Flash, something he also predicted with floppy disk drives and more recently optical drives, wrote Farhad Manjoo, a technology columnist for online magazine Slate.

As I mentioned, the screen is glossy and you can definitely see yourself it in it if the display is dark. But the HP Mini 311 display is hardly the worst offender I’ve seen in this area, and the screen looks great when looking at pictures, movies, or video games.

Aside from the dual core Atom processor, the ASRock ION 330 has another trick up its sleeve. Like the HP(HP F4809A Battery) Mini 311 mentioned above, it has NVIDIA ION graphics. That means this nettop an handle many relatively recent games with 3D graphics as well as 1080p HD video playback. Although the model featured in this review comes with a DVD drive, the ION chipset is also capable of decoding Blu-Ray discs if you happen to have a Blu-Ray drive.

The keyboard features a distinctive two-town design. The top row of keys, which includes the Fn, Esc, and Delete keys as well as a few others are in black with white lettering. The rest of the keyboard is a gray/silver color with black and/or orange letters. My only complaint with this layout is that I keep forgetting the Delete key is in the top row just above Backspace. And since it’s hanging out with a bunch of keys that I don’t use very often such as insert and Print Screen, PA3399U-1BRS,it always takes me a moment to find the button. This probably wouldn’t be a problem if the IdeaPad U150 were the only laptop I used, but since it’s not… it is.

Using standard benchmarks, a notebook with the 2010 Intel Core i5 vPro processor can run business productivity applications up to 80 percent faster(1), multiple applications up to twice as fast(1), and protect confidential data up to 3.5 times quicker(1) compared to a 3-year-old mainstream notebook.

The U160 uses a Chiclet keyboard, exclusive to MSI, where each key is situated independently; this makes for greater stability, and also makes the keyboard quieter to use. Every time your fingers touch the keys, you experience MSI(Wind U100 Battery)’s commitment to providing a perfect user experience; this commitment to user comfort underpins all of MSI’s R&D and manufacturing operations.

The IdeaPad U350 laptop also packs in several unexpected features, such as Ambient Light Sensor which automatically adjusts the screen’s brightness according to the lighting environment, reducing eye strain while preserving laptop battery life. Also, Dolby Sound Room complements the video experience by providing a high quality surround-sound audio experience. And with VeriFace facial recognition technology, they can make their face their password for easy log in.

Dell, for example, tried to keep the keys as large as possible on the Dell Mini 9, but ended up running out of space and removing the entire function key row. That was a diaster for Dell(Inspiron 6400 Battery), but they fortunately took a fresh approach on the new Mini 10 netbook with a keyboard that runs nearly edge-to-edge with the frame. Lenovo seems to have struggled on this S10-2 netbook, but has cleaned up their act on the new S10-3 model which features a 98% full-size keyboard. Other than those layout quirks, the keyboard does offer a quality feel and it’s still comfortable to use once you figure out where the keys are. There’s a decent amount of tactile force feedback which is an important aspect of a great typing experience.

The proposed changes would likely affect all consumers to a degree, he said, since electronics goods, because of how quickly they lose value, tend to be shipped via air from factories in Asia to the U.S. rather than sent by ship.Neither the Department of Transportation nor the House Aviation Subcommittee responded to requests for comment. A major snowstorm was expected to hit Washington D.C. on Friday and many workers stayed home.

Tech pundits said Apple’s crusade against Flash appears to be philosophical, practical and political. But to be honest, so do most computers with single-core Atom processors. And while some tasks will see marked improvement thanks to the dual core processor, others won’t.

The 11.6 inch, 1366 x 768 pixel display has a shiny black plastic bezel around it. Like the bezel, the screen is glossy, which means that when the display is dark, the computer can serve double duty as a mirror in bright environments. While that could come in handy if you’re shaving, it’s not something I normally consider a selling point. Fortunately, Lenovo(IdeaPad SL500 Batteries) gives you a fair bit of control over the backlight, and I didn’t have any real problems reading the screen in most situations. I wouldn’t recommend using the laptop in direct sunlight though.

In other words, we can expect other tablet makers to borrow some of the iPad’s best ideas and coolest features and incorporate them in their future products in the coming months. And, just as the launch of the iPhone forced other smartphone makers to think harder about design and usability and brought about the app revolution, expect the iPad to force rival tablet makers’ R&D teams to work a little harder to win over consumers.

Encased in a sophisticated polished silver shell, the IdeaPad U350 laptop starts at 1.58 kg and measures less than 25mm thick. While thin and light to the touch on the outside, Lenovo(ThinkPad R60 Battery) loaded the PC’s inside full of the latest technologies to maximize entertainment and computing performance. A 16:9 aspect ratio high definition 13.3 inch LED panel and an HDMI connector allow users to fully enjoy watching movies or other multimedia in high definition.

I wasn’t exactly too impressed with the keyboard and touchpad. While it’s expected that a smaller body requires reducing the size of keys, there are some issues that are worth mentioning. Lenovo(ThinkPad X60 Battery) decided to take a regular keyboard and shrink it proportionally until it fits on this 10-inch netbook’s body. This makes typing especially difficult for those coming from a regular keyboard and for those with large hands. I should also mention that Lenovo laptop keyboards interchange the “Fn” and “Ctrl” keys, which may take some getting used for those who aren’t familiar with their ThinkPad products. 

For instance, the battery inside an already-padded box for a new notebook PC might need to be packaged in an additional fiberboard box along with extra shipping documents, he said.It could also mean untold numbers of workers overseas and in the U.S. will have to get “fully-regulated hazmat” training to simply handle a box with an iPod or HP(HP dv8000 Battery) laptop inside, Kerchner said.

At the press event, Jobs avoided any mention of Flash, even when selling the iPad as delivering the Internet in your hand. And at a company staff meeting a few days later, Jobs reportedly called Adobe’s browser plug-in “buggy” and said the world will be moving to HTML5, a new Web language that will eliminate the need for Flash in many instances.

Aside from the NVIDIA ION graphics processor though, the HP(HP NX7400 Battery) Mini 311’s defining feature is probably its 11.6 inch display. This glossy screen has a native resolution of 1366 x 768 pixels. That means it can display 720p HD video without any quality reduction. But it also means that you’ll spend a lot less time scrolling to view web sites or applications that don’t fit on a typical 1024 x 600 pixel netbook display.

With its revolutionary exterior design, which incorporates many new, high-fashion elements, the MSI Wind U160 has attracted a great deal of positive comment, and has been the recipient of a product design award at the 2010 iF design awards in Germany. All of this has made the Wind U160 one of the most sought-after hi-tech luxury mobile computing devices.

The S10-2 netbook offers a standard set of ports that are found on most netbooks. There’s a total of three USB ports: one on the left and two on the right side. That’s a great idea to prevent too many cables from cluttering a single side. Ethernet and VGA connectors are on the left side along with a line in for microphones and line out for headphones. On the front there are some standard LED indicators and a 4-in-1 reader that supports cards including Secure Digital and Memory Stick. The AC power connector, Kensington lock,FPCBP64, and WiFi switch are on the right side. The IdeaPad is completely on par with most netbooks on the market, there aren’t any extras or anything missing.

“Apple’s gone from buying something off the rack to buying something where they have the pieces and they can tailor it themselves to their unique body shape,” Brookwood said.Brookwood said he expects to see more of the A4 chipset if the iPad proves successful.Apple(Apple M8403 Battery)’s iPad announcement also revealed a deeper antipathy toward Adobe Flash, the ubiquitous browser plug-in that enables most of the video and animations you see on the Web.

Apple has made some beautiful products, and the iPad is no exception, but their recent trend is towards more and more closed systems which pot Apple in full control of its economy. In the end it is clear this is not about open standards at all, such arguments are hardly fitting of a company like Apple.

This is one of the main reasons we loved the MSI(MSI Wind U100 Battery) GT725, and it still stands as one of the most impressive gaming laptops out there. Nvidia’s GTX 260M is a capable chip at slightly higher resolutions, if you want more fidelity, although it does tend to end up in more expensive laptops. Oh, and for the most part don’t get too worked up about SLI solutions, leave that to desktops.

The speakers are located underneath the netbook near the front, and they’re reasonably loud and clear. The 6 cell laptop battery sits flush with the bottom of the case, so you don’t have to worry about any ugly bulge near the back of this notebook.

As you can see, the ASRock ION 330 with its dual core processor scored much HP Mini 311 with a single core Atom N270 CPU. But neither came close to the score notched by the Asus(Eee PC 1000 Battery) UL20A, a computer with a much faster Core 2 Duo SU7300 processor.Likewise, when I ran the PassMark Performance 7 benchmark, the ASRock wiped the floor with the HP Mini 311 in the CPU test, but the UL20A still came out on top.

With a 6 cell ThinkPad X60 battery, the notebook measure 11.4″ x 7.6″ x 1.3″ and weighs about 3.3 pounds.

You can open the top of the computer case by removing two screws, but there’s not a lot of space on the inside, and the first thing you’ll be confronted with is the top of the disc drive. So if you want to spend some time modifying this nettop, you’re going to need to be able to maneuver in a pretty tight space.

And that means that for every day activities such as web surfing, the HP(HP NX7400 Battery) Mini 311 is no better than an average netbook, albeit one with a high resolution display. And in some ways, it might actually not even be as good.

If you care about watching video on YouTube or Hulu, want to edit videos or convert them to your smartphone, or play mainstream games, ION netbooks and nettops are the best choice. Pine Trail provides a very limited experience. Too bad for netbook buyers.
