Around the sides you get pretty much everything you’d want from a business notebook

Laptop Batteries News Comments Off

What’s more, Norton Internet Security 2010 also comes with an effective two-way firewall, to stop attacks getting in and more importantly, to stop your system from affecting others should you already be infected.

A new High-Speed Port Replicator for the Portégé R700 (Portege S100 Battery) provides fast access to a desktop environment and eliminates the hassle of connecting multiple cables. The port replicator features a host of ports, including two ultrafast USB 3.0 ports, four USB 2.0 ports, Gigabit Ethernet as well as Line-In/Line-Out audio ports, HDMI, RGB and Serial connections.

The Eee PC 1201pn held its own on our benchmark tests. On our PCMark Vantage test, which measures overall system performance, the system scored 1,310. The Lenovo(Lenovo IdeaPad S10 Battery) IdeaPad S12-2959-5GU, a netbook equipped with the previous generation of Ion graphics, scored a similar 1,232. (Mind you, most netbooks aren’t capable of running this test at all.) For good measure, we also ran the older version of this test, PCMark05, on which the 1201pn scored 1,930—a respectable number, since the only other Pine Trail netbook that could handle this test, the Samsung N210, scored 1,314.

An we’ve never been more grateful for one than when we dodged the in-flight movie “Have You Heard About the Morgans?” in favor of 720p Mad Men episodes on the HP(HP DV6000 Battery) Mini 210. When you’re not watching Don Draper fool around with his sixth mistress of the season, all those pixels also go a long way in making text and graphics on the Web exceptionally crisp and sharp, not to mention cutting down on scrolling.

The second advantage is that Sager allows you to upgrade the internals anytime you want. If your discrete graphics isn’t any good, you can easily buy a new one from the distributor and get it swapped and installed. Makes a lot of sense really,3UR18650Y-2-QC236, as you probably won’t need to upgrade all the time, but when you do need to, you don’t have to buy a new notebook but instead just get the parts changed like a desktop.

Around the sides you get pretty much everything you’d want from a business notebook: four USB 2.0 ports (one doubles as an eSATA port), an ExpressCard/54 slot, FireWire, a dial-up modem, mic and headphone jacks, an SD card slot, Gigabit Ethernet (there’s also 802.11n Wi-Fi and Bluetooth), a smart card reader — deep breath — a Kensington lock slot, a DVD burner and a VGA (D-sub) connection and DisplayPort for hooking up an external monitor.

We freely admit to being infatuated with this notebook; we heard strains of Barry White playing every time we came near it. But we think you’ll probably love it too: it looks stunning while retaining a functional design, and it offers pretty much everything you’d want from a business notebook PA3456U-1BRS. Check it out in store and prepare to be smitten. You’ll shell out almost $2700, but for a business notebook of this calibre we think that’s a pretty reasonable proposition.

At the bottom we come to the touchpad, which mercifully has a nice matte finish and texture that makes using it a pleasure. There’s a dedicated button to enable and disable the touchpad above it, BATCL50L Battery, and it’s multi-touch capable. The buttons themselves are curiously large, but they feel fine and offer the right amount of resistance.

All said and done, the Dell Vostro 3300 laptop is a sophisticated 13-inch business laptop, combining elegant style with top-notch performance. The Dell(Dell Vostro 1510 Battery) Vostro 3300 is decently priced for a business laptop — it’s available for as low as Rs. 36,000 but our review sample’s configuration sells for a price of Rs. 50,000.

It offers much better performance than the Dell Vostro V13, Lenovo Thinkpad T400s(Lenovo ThinkPad T400 Battery),  and HP ProBook 4520s, comes with a nice feature set and security software tailored for business usage. If you run your own business or are part of a small organization craving for a premium-looking, stylish compact 13-inch business laptop which is thin and light with excellent performance, we highly recommend the new Dell Vostro 3300.

Despite the drawbacks of the the battery, weight and form-factor, the notebook has two advantages that’s hard to beat

IT News Comments Off

When we say head-to-toe glossy plastic, we mean it, and that includes a glossy plastic keyboard. The keys are devoid of texture, have only the most minimal beveling, and just don’t feel particularly stable. What you’re left with are completely flat, smooth, wobbly keys that make typing a lot less enjoyable than it ought to be.

Equipped with Windows® 7 Professional, the laptops include a wealth of features and ports required by business users, including spacious hard drives, fast DDR3 RAM, the ability to dock to a port replicator, an ExpressCard™ slot, an eSATA/USB combo port with Sleep-and-Charge4, as well as a built-in DVD SuperMulti drive and Webcam. The Portégé R700 also features a high-capacity six-cell Portege R500 battery with a battery life rating of up to 8.5 hours5. An optional nine-cell battery that can remain on when docked will increase the battery life rating up to 12.5 hours.

We really like Norton Internet Security 2010, not only are they one of the big names in online protection but installing and setting up the latest version of this software is so easy it can be done in minutes. It offers everything you need in one simple package,BTP-AMJ1 Battery, so you’ll find an fast and thorough anti-virus engine, anti-phishing and other spyware tools.

Sound recorded via the system’s integrated microphone plays back loudly and fairly clearly, whether the person speaking sits a couple of feet back or leans in close. The VGA Webcam, embedded into the glossy screen bezel, records videos that sound decent and look crisp. Skin tones are rich in color, and onscreen motion looks excellent—something we wish we could say of all netbook cameras.

The old way of thinking was to create a data queue of sorts, he said, so phones line up to get their e-mails or websites in the order in which they requested them from the hotspot. But some of those phones, including the iPhone, are set to go to sleep so frequently that they’re essentially bumped out of line again and again, which leads to needless Apple M6392 battery usage, he said.

HP calls the 10.1-inch display on the HP(HP NX6120 Battery) Mini 210 “HD” due to its 1336 x 768 resolution, and while while it’s no substitute for the high-def set in your living room, it does pack an impressive number of pixels for its physical size. Although average brightness and a glossy screen can make it finicky in outdoor situations, the wide viewing angle, vibrant color and high resolution make for a superb airplane cinema.

Despite the drawbacks of the the battery, weight and form-factor, the notebook has two advantages that’s hard to beat. Firstly, its very competitive price of just S$2338. Compared to the stratospheric asking price of the Dell(Inspiron 1420 Battery) Alienware M15x at S$6390.99, the Sager NP8690 is a heck of a good deal.

If you will predominantly use the Vostro 3300 indoors, this shouldn’t be a huge concern; but if you’ll be travelling a lot with the slim, light 13-inch Dell Vostro 3300 laptop then you should seriously invest in the 8-cell Vostro 1510 Battery.

We tested the Pavilion dv7z battery by disabling power saving, turning up the screen brightness and enabling Wi-Fi, then looping an SD video file. The notebook lasted 2hr 26min. It’s a not a bad result for a laptop this size packing decent components under the hood. HP’s 15in Probook 6540b only lasted 2hr 13min, while Dell’s smaller, 13in Vostro V13 lasted 2hr 1min.

It’s unabashedly big and chunky and strangely, that’s how we like it as a notebook - especially when we factored in the performance of the notebook

Below the speakers and media buttons is the keyboard proper. Toshiba(Toshiba Satellite M200 Battery)’s keyboard layout really is one of the better ones we’ve seen come through, including a full-sized numeric keypad along with dedicated document navigation keys. They even managed to include a scroll lock key! To top it all off, the keyboard is backlit with subtle, attractive white LEDs. It’s just a shame the keyboard itself is so lousy.

With an all-new sophisticated design that will turn heads in the boardroom, the Portégé(Portege R500 Battery) R700 features a 13.3-inch diagonal HD widescreen LED-backlit display3, a premium raised tile keyboard and a wide TouchPad™ with customizable Multi-touch Control that makes typing and navigation easy and comfortable.

If you go online, then you need protection. No discuss, no argument. With the increased threat from malicious viruses, hackers and phishers, going online unprotected is akin to walking home late, alone through a rough part of town!

The speakers, located along the beveled front edge, are quite loud and can fill a small room with ease. Cranked to the highest volume levels, FPCBP119,the sound gets a bit fuzzy, however, so we recommend topping out at 75 percent volume. Half-volume is adequate, even when the system is resting on a soft surface.

Wi-Fi routers may have to be upgraded so that they can tell which mode to use, based on what information is being downloaded, she said.Rozner’s NAPtime software fix is similar, but works best in public settings where multiple phones are trying to get data from a Wi-Fi hotspot at the same time, he said.

Unfortunately, video formats that fall outside the Broadcom’s repertoire are left stuttering as the load falls to the Atom and Intel graphics chip. Even with Flash 10.1 installed, Hulu content played only smoothly at 288p, GRAPE34 Battery, and even with those settings, it couldn’t scale to full screen without turning into a slideshow. With YouTube, we could push content to 480p, but again, full-screen playback stuttered even with quality at minimum.

It’s unabashedly big and chunky and strangely, that’s how we like it as a notebook - especially when we factored in the performance of the notebook. It definitely outperforms most of the gaming class notebooks and has shown that it’s nearly the equivalent of the Dell(Dell Latitude D600 Battery) Alienware M15x in our benchmarks.

That said, its battery life is definitely something that needs more work - the measly 3-cell Pavilion DV5 battery that the Sager notebook uses is hardly enough to sustain the notebook when unplugged. This is one notebook you don’t want to be moving around too much, especially when you factor in the backbreaking 3.44kg weight. Perhaps they figured that out and packed a minimal battery unit to keep costs down for consumers.

When we ran our WorldBench 6 test suite, the notebook scored an excellent 107. The MP3 encoding and Blender 3D rendering tests took 58 seconds and 54 seconds respectively to complete, which isn’t particularly impressive — these results are slightly slower than the budget Medion Akoya MD98330,Pavilion ZV5000 Battery, a Core i3 notebook for home users. 3DMark06 returned a low score of 1770; this is an unsurprising result from the integrated Intel graphics adapter. Modern games are pretty much ruled out — hardly a surprise for a notebook that means Srs Bsns — but you’ll be able to watch high-definition videos.

Portégé ultraportable laptops are not only a demonstration of Toshiba’s superior engineering and craftsmanship

Laptop Batteries News Comments Off

When you flip open the lid, you’re presented with a design most other manufacturers have since abandoned. The Harmon Kardon speakers above the keyboard sound excellent for notebook speakers; they’re a bit tinny but notebook sound quality is a contradiction in terms.

Unfortunately, situated between them is a series of touch-based media buttons. Toshiba(Toshiba Tecra A9 Battery) at least backlights them with white LEDs, but the touch-based volume control is disappointing. Toshiba was one of the last stalwarts to employ an analog volume control dial on their notebooks and the omission is missed.

“Portégé ultraportable laptops are not only a demonstration of Toshiba’s superior engineering and craftsmanship, but our ability to innovate to meet the demands of businesses,” said Carl Pinto, vice president of product development, Toshiba(Toshiba Satellite M200 Battery) America Information Systems, Inc., Digital Products Division. “The Portégé R700 delivers the ultimate mobile experience at breakthrough prices that businesses have been waiting for, providing both performance and battery life within an extremely thin and light, yet durable form factor without compromising key features such as an integrated DVD drive.”

Most laptops come with a selection of software pre-installed but when it comes to a word processor, spreadsheet and presentation tools, PA3537U-1BRS , the best you can hope for is a trial version. However, if you need to do any serious work then you’ll need a dedicated office software suite but why buy one when there are great versions online for free. Check out OpenOffice and Ability, both offer fantastic alternatives to full-priced packages.

“If my iPod uses my access point to download stuff from Hulu, its Apple A1189 battery would last five times more, simply because we do this smart fix,” she said.

Despite it shortcomings in other departments, the HP(HP Pavilion dv7z Battery) Mini 210 actually steamrolled competing notebooks on video. Because the Broadcom chip supports H.264, VC-1 and MPEG-2 compression, most downloaded clips have no issues tapping into it for silky smooth playback, including 720p Mad Men clips encoded in H.264 that we used for testing (with the lean and efficient Zoom Player Standard).

The Sager NB8690 may be a huge chunky machine, but it is hands down one of the more powerful notebooks to have entered our labs for a long while. While such powerful notebooks PA3399U-1BRS do exist, they are usually ‘blinged’ up with fancy lights that distract or cost way too much for the pocket. The Sager notebook however, is none of those things. It doesn’t try to score any points for looks, nor does it try to go on a diet.

The notebook’s beauty is just not chassis-deep: inside there are components that should keep any road warrior happy, as long as they aren’t engaging in specialised tasks or playing high-end games. The notebook is equipped with an Intel Core i5-540M CPU that runs at 2.53 GHz and 2GB of DDR3 RAM. The CPU has two physical cores, ThinkPad R60 Battery,so you will have four virtual cores to play with in total thanks to Hyper-Threading. Turbo Boost can jack the clockspeed up to 3.066GHz automatically. Quite frankly, most office productivity tasks won’t require this — the multiple cores are much more important, because they ensure that multitasking will be a breeze.

Battery life is the only blemish on an otherwise stellar performance by the Dell Vostro 3300 laptop. The 13-inch business laptop ships with a 4-cell Vostro 1520 Battery by default, with the option of bumping it up to an 8-cell version. In our synthetic battery test — at full-screen brightness, bluetooth turned off and at Windows 7’s high performance preset — the Dell Vostro 3300’s 4-cell battery lasted for exactly 1 hour. In real-world usage — surfing the Web over Wi-Fi on power save battery mode — we managed to time just 2 hours 30 minutes from the Vostro 3300’s 4-cell battery.

The feeling of sluggishness carried over to general Windows performance to some degree

IT News Comments Off

If you’re going online then you need to be kept safe, not only from viruses and trojans that sit online waiting to snare the unwary but also from hackers, keyloggers and scammers. The latest Internet Security Suites offer the best all-round protection and deliver piece-of-mind.

Another (current) disadvantage of the iPhone 4 is its video calling feature. Apple(Apple M8416 Battery) promises to make its video calling technology available for free to other phones and networks in the future. However, until that time, one can only do video calling from one’s iPhone 4 to another iPhone 4 (and only via Wi-Fi).

The laptop also features Toshiba(Toshiba Tecra M9 Battery)’s EasyGuard® Technology, which helps protect the laptop from jolts, spills and theft. This includes added protection around system components, a Hard Drive Impact Sensor and spill-resistant keyboard as well as a host of software that continuously checks the performance and functionality of the system.

But they are nonetheless important, she said. In a test of a software patch called Catnap, which Papagiannaki has worked on in conjunction with Carnegie Mellon University, she said phones using updated Wi-Fi signals lasted two to five times longer than those without.

The feeling of sluggishness carried over to general Windows performance to some degree, as well. While it’s no Sony Vaio P Series, opening new windows and even menus always seemed to carry a delay longer than we’re used to, and software like HP QuickSync and HP(HP NX7400 Battery) CloudDrive fidgeting away from the taskbar didn’t seem to help matters. PCMark Vantage seemed to confirm this below-average desktop performance with a score of 1302 PCMarks. That’s on the low side for netbooks, which can sometimes reach above 1,500.

As for our Portability Index, it’s a measurement where we consider the Pavilion ZV5000 battery uptime of the notebook and divide it by the product of the unit’s weight and volume. The higher the ratio, the more portable the unit is. The Sager notebook obviously scores much much lower than most of the other notebooks in this comparison. It’s so low, we don’t really expect anyone to be using this without a power point and its accompanying chunky heavy power adapter too. In a way, it lives up to its DTR moniker in the strictest sense.

The touchpad is a little cramped but has a nice smooth texture. If you’re like us you’ll prefer the joystick-like pointing device located in the middle of the keyboard. It’s great if you’re writing while on public transport, and it has two dedicated buttons. Some people might prefer the convex tip of a TrackPoint device on a Lenovo(Lenovo ThinkPad T400 Battery) ThinkPad rather than the convex tip on the EliteBook, but we didn’t mind it.

While the Portege R700 is designed mainly with business users and professionals on-the-go in mind, Toshiba(Toshiba Portege R500 Battery) also debuts the Satellite R630 which differs from the Portege R700 in a few ways to better suit consumer users. Since docking is not typically required in private usage, this connector is omitted from the Satellite R630, as is the fingerprint sensor. As standard a CSV screen is fitted, although in some countries customers are also offered the choice of non-CSV models.

The onboard single speaker on the Vostro(Vostro 2510 Battery) 3300 is modest at best by laptop standards — we recommend plugging in headphones for best results. Owing to its metal exterior, the V3300 laptop heats up a bit — especially near the right palmrest, and prolonged usage on the lap’s uncomfortable. But the heat isn’t as perceptible while working on the Dell Vostro 3300 when it’s perched on a desk.

Every laptop comes with Wi-Fi built-in so why not hook up to the internet using the wireless technology?

Technology News Comments Off

The biggest disadvantage of the new iPhone 4 is its on-board AT&T network. This network is notorious for poor reception and dropped calls. It has also recently dropped its unlimited FPCBP131 flat-rate data plan. Unfortunately, the iPhone has been locked into this network for the last 3 years.

The new model offers even more useful features to enhance its portability and appeal for business people; e.g. a durable yet very elegant black magnesium-alloy cover with a matt finish, ThinkPad R60 Battery,a 3D sensor for hard disk protection against drops and shocks, a broad range of connectivity options, a non-reflective screen and a docking station connector. The docking station supports HDMI and USB 3.0 for fast data transfer.

Every laptop comes with Wi-Fi built-in so why not hook up to the internet using the wireless technology? To do this you’ll need to either switch out the broadband router for a Wireless router with modem inside or simply add a Wireless Router to your fixed connection.

The Portégé(Portege R400 Battery) R700 also features a light, yet durable magnesium alloy casing reinforced with a new honeycomb rib design incorporated within the palm rests and base of the laptop. Similar to technology used in aerospace construction, this structural enhancement to the laptop provides increased rigidity and durability.

Konstantina Papagiannaki, a senior researcher at Intel Labs in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, said that these Wi-Fi software changes are really “semi-solutions” and should be adopted in conjunction with longer-lasting batteries and possibly phone software that makes smartphones more energy-efficient.

Our HP(HP Mini 1000 Battery) Mini 210 hit the Windows 7 desktop in about a minute 20 seconds, and opened a browser window about 20 seconds later, putting it on the slower side, even for a netbook.

Lasting a jaw-dropping short time of just 39 minutes, the Sager NP8690 most likely breaks our records for a notebook with the lousiest battery life. To be sure, we even ran this test a few times just to be sure and results were similar. This also means the power consumption of the unit should be pretty high and our calculations show it to be so, with the unit consuming a whopping 64.89W. It also doesn’t help that the HP Pavilion dv3000 battery capacity is so low, as other DTRs packed a much more powerful battery that let them last much longer. Perhaps the limited power battery pack was designed on purpose since most people won’t be lugging a notebook around this heavy and chunky anyway.

Above the keyboard are touch-sensitive buttons to disable the touchpad and wireless, adjust volume and launch a Web browser. There’s also a button that brings up a menu to install HP(HP NX6120 Battery) software. We couldn’t find any way to remap this button to do something useful, which, quite frankly, is bizarre. We loved the location of the fingerprint reader — on the palm rest’s far right — because it’s out of the way and you aren’t likely to hit it with a thumb when using the touchpad.

With the fast Core i5-520M processor, ample 6GB RAM, faster 7200rpm hard drive, and a pretty good graphics card, you will not encounter any bottlenecks while multitasking with your work programs on the Dell(Vostro 1310 Battery) Vostro 3300. You can also watch a DVD movie or high-def 720p or 1080p HD files on the Vostro 3300 — the movie playback’s smooth and stutter-free, even though the matte screen doesn’t make color and visuals pop as compared to a glossy screen.

The overwhelming majority of Toshiba(Satellite A70 Battery)’s notebooks on the market are head to toe glossy plastic, and for us it means the difference between “bargain” and “cheap.” Gloss on the lid is still fine and fairly common, but most manufacturers are quietly edging away from using glossy plastics. Even Toshiba recently announced their “Fusion X2,” which utilizes more attractive, less gaudy matte plastics. For those of you that like glossy laptops, though, the A505D might just be your dream come true.

The hardware inside Toshiba’s A505D certainly offers reasonable performance for the budget-conscious consumer

Laptop Batteries News Comments Off

The HD version of the Avatar trailer was smooth and completely stutter-free in 720p, although the color and crispness weren’t quite on a par with true HD. (When we watched the same video on the Dell(Dell Inspiron Mini 10 Battery) Mini 10, we witnessed the choppy slide-show effect that is common among netbooks without Ion graphics.) Even locally stored HD video, downloaded from Microsoft’s WMV HD Content Showcase, played like a dream in 720p. Overall, we were thrilled by our media experience on the Eee PC 1201pn and prefer it to more affordable netbooks equipped with a Broadcom Crystal HD video decoder, such as the HP Mini 210 HD Edition.

These matters seem most pressing for iPhone users since AT&T, the company that offers cell coverage for those phones, Pavilion DV2000 Battery, has decided to cap the amount of data its customers can use before they have to pay extra. That change, in effect, encourages iPhone users to send and receive data over Wi-Fi networks whenever possible, since they won’t be charged for those transmissions.

We do give HP(HP NX7400 Battery) credit for a few useful programs, including ArcSoft WebCam companion for capturing footage and snapshots from the built-in webcam, a number of decent ad-supported games including Plants vs. Zombies, and HP CloudDrive for saving documents where you can get them from anywhere – 2GB comes free.

The CPU has two physical cores, so you will have four virtual cores to play with in total thanks to Hyper-Threading. Turbo Boost can jack the clockspeed up to 3.066GHz automatically. Quite frankly, most office productivity tasks won’t require this — the multiple cores are much more important, because they ensure that multitasking will be a breeze.

In a real world gaming performance, we loaded up the notebook with Far Cry 2 and tested the unit with the Far Cry 2 benchmark program at Very High settings. Two resolutions were used: 1920 x 1080 and the more common 1280 x 1024 and found that even at the highest settings, PA3450U-1BRS,the notebook was able to deliver decent frame rates compared to other notebooks using less powerful discrete graphics engines. Most importantly, it also beat the M15x with much better frame rates at both our tested resolutions.

The Dell(Dell Vostro A860 Battery) Vostro 3300 is one of the fastest 13-inch laptop we’ve tested. The business laptop just aced all our synthetic benchmarks with very high scores — 111 on WorldBench 6, 7100 on PC Mark 05, and 8195 on CineBench, respectively — better numbers than any of our Top 5 Mainstream Consumer Laptops. With a 3D Mark 06 score just under 4,000, and if the rigors of work call for a stress-busting activity, you can also do some casual gaming on the Dell Vostro 3300 — we had no problem playing FarCry 2 at high settings on the laptop’s Nvidia GeForce 310M graphics card.

The hardware inside Toshiba(Satellite A200 Battery)’s A505D certainly offers reasonable performance for the budget-conscious consumer, but the overall design of the unit leaves a lot to be desired. It seems like for every design win, for every perk, there’s something else undone. Toshiba outfits the unit with what they call their “Fusion Finish with Sonic Pattern in Black Onyx.” What this means is an absolutely relentless, unchecked use of glossy black plastics with silver accents.

With a starting weight of just three pounds2 and about one inch thin, the Portégé R700 is able to support the latest Intel® Core™ family of full-powered processors as a result of new Airflow Cooling Technology. This innovative new cooling system co-developed by Toshiba(Toshiba Equium U300 Battery) and Intel uses directed streams of fresh air to cool the heat-generating components so business users can get the performance, mobility and longer battery life they need to stay productive on the go.

Finally, the iPhone 4 allows limited multitasking. This does not mean that every App(Apple A1185 Battery) can run simultaneously on the iPhone 4; however, certain “passive” functions will run. Two examples include Pandora’s streaming audio, which can be set to play in the background, and navigation Apps, which function while the user is on a phone call.

Note that like the Acer 5542 we looked at recently, the A505D is a slightly older design and it is nearing EOL

IT News Comments Off

Note that like the Acer(Acer BTP-43D1 Battery) 5542 we looked at recently, the A505D is a slightly older design and it is nearing EOL. However, there are plenty of laptops sporting the now outdated M-series AMD processors, and we expect to see a lot of these laptops on sale in the coming months.

The original $800 MSRP is far too much, and even $650 is more than most would be willing to pay, but forgetting price for a minute it’s still useful to see what the M600 laptops have to offer. What’s more, we just received the new Toshiba(Satellite A300 Battery) A665 for testing (literally—the FedEx guy came by 15 minutes ago!), and it updates the A505D in some interesting ways, so think of this review as a springboard into the A665 next week.

FaceTime face-to-face video calling is another selling point for the iPhone 4, although for the moment it works only on other iPhone 4 devices and with Wi-Fi connection at both sides. The set-up is quite easy: after the caller presses the FaceTime button, the recipient of the video call can accept the invitation to talk and his or her image appears on the screen. The caller’s image also appears, in a small corner window. The FaceTime application can also be initiated during a regular audio call.

Building on a long history of industry firsts and ultraportable laptop innovations, Toshiba(Toshiba Equium U300  Battery)’s Digital Products Division (DPD), a division of Toshiba America Information Systems, Inc., today announced the Portégé® R700, the U.S version of the world’s lightest 13.3-inch full-performance ultraportable laptop with an integrated DVD drive1. The Portégé R700 provides business users with unprecedented performance and durability in a highly mobile product with prices starting under $1,000.

For now, the development of a cheap and powerful BATCL50L battery, or high energy capacitor, is what is holding back the widespread roll out of electric vehicles. Though the science is rapidly advancing, it may be years before such an advanced energy storage device hits the market.

And that’s a great way to completely ruin the otherwise smooth-as-silk 1080p video. But we always expect laptop PA3594U-1BRS speakers to be a massive letdown. Besides, if they weren’t it would just be encouraging numpties on trains not to use headphones because everyone must love the compilation of Family Guy songs they’ve made…

Don’t be sorry, be safe. That’s the warning you need when it comes to backing up all your files, folders and other assorted treasures on your laptop FPCBP130. Sure, you can back them up online but we think nothing beats having a physical copy of your hard drive stored away safely just in case you need it.

The glossy 12.1-inch, LED-backlit display is about as roomy as netbook displays get. The generous 1,366×768 native resolution has a 16-to-9 aspect ratio; it’s a treat compared with the limited 1,024×600 resolution offered by the majority of Pine Trail entrants. And thanks to the Ion 2 graphics, streaming video looks much better on the Eee(EeePC 701 Battery) PC 1201pn than it does on most other netbooks. (Nvidia recommends downloading Adobe Flash 10.1 and browsing in Mozilla Firefox for the highest-quality experience.) Videos on Hulu played much more smoothly than on typical netbooks and only seldom stuttered.

The black Portege(Portege M600 Battery) R700 enables business users to travel light without compromising on performance. Thanks to the integration of the latest Intel standard voltage Core processors and the availability of an optical disc drive, the slim and light laptop is equipped to run even the most-demanding multimedia applications. And the powerful performance of Portege R700 doesn’t compromise on battery life - it can run for an entire working day of up to eight hours on one battery charge.

Once you hit the Windows desktop, you’ll find an unfortunate gaggle of clutter including the obligatory eBay shortcut

Technology News Comments Off

This is one for the regular travellers, as those who seldom venture out with their laptop in tow have no worry about being in some remote location without juice. A spare Inspiron 640m battery will cost you between £70 – £100 but it’s an investment worth making as it means you can leave the charger at home.

While the design leaves something to be desired, Asus(Asus A22-P701H Battery) hasn’t skimped on connectivity, offering Wi-Fi wireless (in 802.11b/g/n flavors), an Ethernet jack, and a Bluetooth 2.1 + EDR radio. Apart from the standard netbook ports and connectors (VGA, three USB, a three-format flash-card slot, headphone and mic jacks, an Ethernet jack, and a lock slot), Asus has also included an HDMI-out port, something you don’t often see on a netbook.

Airflow Cooling Technology, co-developed by Intel and Toshiba, allows Toshiba(Toshiba Portege M600 Battery) to integrate the latest Intel Core family processors in the Portege R700’s slim casing while keeping the sound of the fan to a minimum. A oneycomb structure in the palmrest area makes the Portege R700 highly durable against flexing - protecting the electronic and mechanical components from being damaged, considerably prolonging the life of the product. By innovatively stacking the memory slots vertically, the Portege R700 can accommodate up to 8GB RAM for even more powerful performance.

When it comes to ports, the Toshiba Satellite A665 3D Edition incorporates 1x eSATA/USB combo port with Toshiba(Satellite A100 Battery) USB Sleep-and-Charge, 3x USB 2.0 ports, 1x HDMI port, 1x microphone input with Toshiba Sleep-and-Music, as well as a 5-in-1 memory card reader and an ExpressCard slot. There’s also a built-in Web camera with Toshiba face recognition software.

Researchers said these solutions are exciting because they’re nearly free to implement and because BATCL50L battery life is a major consumer complaint. The problem is particularly pronounced when sending and receiving large amounts of data to, for instance, check e-mail and browse the Web.

Once you hit the Windows desktop, you’ll find an unfortunate gaggle of clutter including the obligatory eBay shortcut, TimesReader from the New York Times (which you need a subscription to actually use), and Norton antivirus trying to worm its way into your heart from the first boot. It’s nothing a little time in the uninstaller won’t clean up, but having to scrub a brand new PC still disappoints us.

Now, here comes the interesting part. The Sager uses one of the most powerful mobile discrete graphics chips at the moment, so we were expecting extremely high performance but we were a tad disappointed. The notebook certainly raised eyebrows with its 13294 3DMark06 score and only the Dell(Dell Inspiron 11z Battery) Alienware M15x remained defiant, beating the Sager notebook by just 1000 points. One reason why the GeForce GTX 260M equipped Dell notebook still managed to get an upper hand is because 3DMark06 also factors in CPU performance and as such, the much more speedier Extreme-class Intel processor on the Alienware machine pulled ahead.

The notebook’s beauty is just not chassis-deep: inside there are components that should keep any road warrior happy, as long as they aren’t engaging in specialised tasks (like 3D design) or playing high-end games (stick to Solitaire). The notebook is equipped with an Intel Core i5-540M CPU that runs at 2.53 GHz and 2GB of DDR3 RAM.

Dell also has a backup and recovery tool packed in with the Vostro 3300 which is a nice way to safeguard your data. The fingerprint reader on the Dell(Dell Vostro 1015 Battery) Vostro 3300 is accompanied by a DigitalPersona software, which guides you through enrolling your fingerprints. Once that’s done, you can login to Windows, websites and applications by just swiping your finger — no passwords required!

The last thing Toshiba(Toshiba Equium U300 Battery) brings to the table is one of the benefits of using an AMD CPU—AMD’s Mobility Radeon HD 4200 integrated graphics processor. While the Intel HD graphics embedded in Intel’s dual-core i-Series Core processors has made great strides in bringing performance parity with AMD and NVIDIA (excepting NVIDIA’s staggering GeForce 320M IGP in Apple’s hardware), overall driver quality, stability, and performance is still largely in AMD’s favor.

Will this allow lithium ion batteries to compete with ultracapacitors?

If you look at the other scores, the Sager notebook easily comes up tops for the more demanding content creativity suites where the notebook flexes its raw processing performance. Despite Sager’s good showing, the Alienware unit still retains the crown almost across the board. The one place Sager did get ahead of the Dell(Latitude D600 Battery) Alienware M15x is is the HDD test suite where the 7200rpm drive on the Sager notebook made its mark.

The touchpad is a little cramped but has a nice smooth texture. If you’re like us you’ll prefer the joystick-like pointing device located in the middle of the keyboard. It’s great if you’re writing while on public transport, and it has two dedicated buttons. Some people might prefer the convex tip of a TrackPoint device on a Lenovo(Lenovo ThinkPad W700 Battery) ThinkPad rather than the convex tip on the EliteBook, but we didn’t mind it.

HP’s QuickWeb feature crops up within seconds of starting the HP(HP dv3000 Battery) Mini 210, offering access to a number of Internet-connected tools including a browser, IM client, and Skype. Unfortunately, the browser crawled along at a barely usable pace when it did work, and completely failed to load anything about nine times out of ten. Even features that didn’t rely on a Web connection, like the photo browser, plugged along so slowly that any time saved from accessing them instantly on startup quickly evaporated in the ensuing moments of awkward navigation and waiting.

Attached to the Turion II’s integrated memory controller is 4GB of DDR2-800 RAM. Consider this unit one of DDR2’s last hurrahs; even Intel’s Atom processors use DDR3 now, and AMD’s most recent Danube/Nile refresh brings DDR3 support to the table as well. DDR2 and DDR3 have already reached price parity, and DDR3 is even starting to show up at slightly lower prices. Toshiba(Toshiba Portege R500 Battery) also packs a 500GB, 5400 RPM hard drive into the A505D—naturally, a Toshiba drive. The unit is rounded out by a Realtek wireless-n adapter and, as a nice value-add, a slot-loading DVD writer.

In terms of resolution, the iPhone 4 has a 3.5 inch screen that carries a resolution of 960 x 640, giving it a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. That translates to each pixel being a mere 78 micrometers across. By comparison, the average cell in a human body is 50 micrometers (0.5 mm) in diameter. It’s no wonder that Apple(Apple A1185 Battery) is calling its iPhone screen the “Retina display.”

Clumsy users should also take notice, as this machine features an EasyGuard protection system to help from bumps and jolts ruining anything within. Other specifications here include an ExpressCard slot, Windows 7 Professional, an eSATA/USB port, a webcam and a BATCL50L battery good for around 8.5 hours of life. There’s also a Port Replicator available for an extra $199 if you’re the docking station type, and considering that it adds USB 3.0 support, you may be now.

Will this allow lithium ion batteries to compete with ultracapacitors? While this technology looks promising, carbon nanotubes are also being investigated for their use in the production of high energy capacitors. In the end, a combination hybrid between a Inspiron 630m battery and a capacitor might be developed for use in specialized applications.

It’s by no means the perfect laptop, though, and typically it’s the dodgy lappy speakers that let it down. The actual bass response and all-round sound is pretty good; unfortunately they were also a little crackly during playback.

OK, so you’ve bought a laptop carry case for when you’re out and about but adding a laptop PA3465U-1BRS sleeve to the equation not only adds that extra layer of security but you’ll find it helps keep the dust and dirt from collecting on your prized laptop when it’s sat idle on your desk.

Dell bundles 64-bit Windows 7 Professional edition operating system with the Vostro 3300. Dell doesn’t compromise on business users’ data and it deploys data security and recovery tools on the Vostro 3300 laptop. As we saw on the Dell(Dell Inspiron 1410 Battery) Inspiron 14R laptop, Dell DataSafe Online (a convenient way to save your data on to the cloud) works much the same way on the Dell Vostro 3300 as it did on the Inspiron 14R laptop, providing you an easy way to upload and share photos, videos, and other files securely on to your own private data vault on the Web.
